Remote assistance

Tools or services that let support staff access a system from afar for troubleshooting or maintenance.

Remote assistance is a support method that lets authorized technicians connect to a computer, server, or industrial device from another location. It is used for troubleshooting, software updates, configuration changes, and routine maintenance when on-site access is slow or impractical. In practice, these tools may rely on VPNs, remote desktop software, vendor portals, or built-in device management features.

In cyber security, remote assistance is valuable because it creates a direct path into sensitive systems. If the account, session, or support workflow is poorly protected, attackers may steal credentials, hijack a support session, or abuse a trusted vendor channel to reach internal networks. That is why defenders treat it as part of the attack surface, especially in industrial and OT environments. Strong MFA, least-privilege access, session logging, approval workflows, and network segmentation help reduce risk while keeping legitimate support available.
