Regulatory approval

formal permission needed to operate under specific rules.

Regulatory approval is formal permission from a government body or other authority to operate a system under specific rules. In cyber security, it matters because many technologies cannot be deployed, updated, or expanded until they meet legal, safety, and control requirements. Approval usually depends on evidence such as testing results, risk assessments, logging, access controls, and incident-response procedures.

Attackers often target the gap between a working system and an approved one. A product may be secure in the lab but still fail review if its monitoring is weak, its supply chain is unclear, or its data handling does not meet policy. Defenders use approval processes as a security control: they force documentation, independent review, and change management. In practice, regulatory approval is part of the trust chain that helps prove a service is safe enough to run at scale.
