Registry metadata is information a package repository records about its packages, such as package identifiers, version numbers, and publication times. Package managers use this data to find releases and decide which versions meet a project’s dependency requirements.
In security, metadata can support supply-chain controls without inspecting package code. For example, a package manager can use publication times to delay newly released versions, giving maintainers time to review suspicious changes before automated builds adopt them. Metadata is not proof that a package is safe or authentic, so teams should combine it with provenance checks, dependency monitoring, and lockfile review.
