Recovery objectives

Targets that define how quickly and how fully critical services should be restored after disruption.

Recovery objectives are agreed targets for restoring critical services after a disruption. They help organizations decide which systems to restore first, how much data or functionality can be lost, and how quickly services must return. Common measures include a recovery time objective (RTO), the maximum acceptable time to restore a service, and a recovery point objective (RPO), the maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time.

In cyber security, these targets turn resilience plans into testable requirements. Teams can use them to prioritize services, plan backup and restoration capacity, assign incident roles, and run exercises that reveal whether recovery is realistic under pressure. Attackers may disrupt systems or damage data, so effective defenses include tested backups and restoration procedures, not just vulnerability fixes. Recovery objectives should reflect business needs and be reviewed through regular testing.
