Recovery exercise

A planned drill that tests whether restoration steps work under real-world conditions.

A recovery exercise is a planned drill that tests whether restoration steps work under real-world conditions. Teams use it to rehearse bringing back servers, endpoints, identity services, backups, and sometimes operational technology in the right order, with the right approvals, dependencies, and timing.

In cyber security, recovery exercises matter because a backup is only useful if it can actually be restored and used safely. Attacks such as ransomware, destructive malware, or configuration tampering can expose gaps in documentation, missing dependencies, bad credentials, or outdated backups. Exercises help defenders find those weaknesses before an incident, verify that recovery point and recovery time goals are realistic, and confirm that IT, security, engineering, and operations can coordinate during a real outage. For industrial environments, they also check that restored systems are safe to put back into production.
