A rack is a physical frame or cabinet that holds servers, switches, storage systems, patch panels, and other equipment in a data center. Racks keep hardware organized, support cable routing, and help with power, cooling, and maintenance. Because many critical systems are concentrated in one place, the rack layout affects how easy it is to monitor, service, and secure infrastructure.
In cyber security, racks matter because physical access can become a security control point. An attacker who reaches a rack may try to plug in a rogue device, disconnect a cable, steal hardware, or tap network links. Defenders reduce this risk with locked cabinets, access badges, camera coverage, clear labeling, asset inventories, and tidy cable management. A well-planned rack arrangement also helps technicians spot changes quickly and recover faster during incidents.
