Queue state

The waiting condition before a job begins execution, often shaped by workload or resource contention.

Queue state is the waiting phase before a scheduled job or process begins execution. In systems such as batch schedulers, ERP platforms, and job queues, a task can sit in this state because the system is busy, resources are limited, dependencies are not ready, or another job is using the same worker, CPU, database session, or license slot.

In cyber security, queue state matters because delay is operational risk. A job may eventually complete successfully but still miss a backup window, patch window, payroll cutoff, or data-sync deadline. Attackers can also abuse resource contention by flooding queues, starving high-priority tasks, or delaying security controls. Defenders watch queue depth, age, and wait time to spot overload, abuse, or scheduler misconfiguration before a green status hides the real problem.
