Quantum software

Programs designed to run on or alongside quantum systems for scientific or computational tasks.

Quantum software is code designed to run on quantum computers or work alongside them. It can translate scientific problems into quantum circuits, control experiments, analyze measurements, or combine quantum and classical computation for tasks such as chemistry and materials research.

In cybersecurity, quantum software matters both as a developing technology and as a source of future risk. Some quantum algorithms could weaken widely used public-key cryptography if sufficiently capable quantum hardware becomes available, while quantum software itself must be tested for errors, unsafe dependencies, and misleading results. In practice, research teams use validation, benchmarking, and error-mitigation methods to account for noisy devices and check that outputs are reproducible. Security teams should also track cryptographic systems that may need migration to post-quantum alternatives.
