Quantum sensing

A family of measurement technologies that use quantum properties to detect physical signals with high sensitivity in specific applications.

Quantum sensing is a group of measurement technologies that use quantum properties of matter or light to detect physical signals with high sensitivity. Depending on the design, a sensor may measure quantities such as magnetic fields, gravity, or temperature. Its capabilities are application-specific; the term does not mean every quantum sensor can detect every kind of anomaly.

In cybersecurity, the key concern arises when these sensors connect to industrial or other networked systems. Measurements can be delayed, altered, replayed, or misattributed if the sensor, communications, or processing software is not protected. Defenders can help preserve trust with device inventories and unique identities, authenticated communications, restricted access, configuration logging, and monitoring for unusual data or device behavior. Calibration and independent validation also help distinguish meaningful physical changes from faulty or manipulated readings.
