QSA

Qualified Security Assessor, an authorized reviewer used in PCI validation.

A Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) is a professional authorized by the PCI Security Standards Council to assess an organization’s compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). A QSA reviews the organization’s environment, controls, and supporting evidence, then documents whether requirements are met.

In a PCI program, a QSA provides assessor validation; the role is distinct from compliance evidence software and technical security tools. For example, scanners, file integrity monitoring, and segmentation tests produce technical results, while a QSA evaluates those results alongside other evidence. Assessor review does not replace operating or testing security controls. Keeping these functions separate helps organizations identify gaps and demonstrate that their controls work in practice.
