A pump station is a facility that uses mechanical pumps to move water or wastewater through pipes, often across pressure changes, elevation differences, or long distances. In operational technology (OT), it is usually controlled by PLCs, remote telemetry, and SCADA systems that help operators start pumps, adjust flow, and monitor alarms.
From a cyber-security perspective, pump stations matter because availability is critical: if controls are interrupted, misconfigured, or disabled, water pressure and distribution can become unstable. Attackers may target remote access, change pump setpoints, suppress alarms, or encrypt support systems to force manual operation. Defenders reduce risk by segmenting OT from IT, limiting external exposure, hardening credentials, maintaining backups, and testing manual override and recovery procedures. Protecting a pump station is therefore not just about preventing intrusion; it is about keeping essential services running safely.
