Publisher account

The identity used to distribute software listings through a marketplace or download channel.

A publisher account is the identity a vendor uses to upload and manage software listings on a marketplace or download portal. In browser-extension ecosystems, that account is part of the trust model: it can shape the name, description, icon, update path, and visibility of the software a user chooses to install.

In attacks, threat actors may use multiple publisher accounts to spread the same unwanted extension, rotate after takedowns, or separate distribution channels to make attribution harder. That matters because a legitimate-looking listing can hide risky behavior until the extension is installed and granted permissions. Defenders reduce this risk by reviewing publisher reputation, verifying ownership, monitoring for duplicate or related accounts, and restricting installs to approved sources or allowlists.
