Proxy plug-in

A component that forwards web requests from a front-end server to backend applications.

A proxy plug-in is a software component that sits between a front-end web server and backend applications, forwarding selected HTTP requests to the right internal service. In middleware stacks, it often handles routing, protocol translation, load distribution, and trust decisions about which requests should be passed through.

This component matters because it lives at a security boundary. If it is misconfigured or vulnerable, attackers may bypass authentication, reach internal resources, or alter data before normal application controls are applied. In real attacks, proxy-layer flaws are valuable because they are often reachable over the network and can expose multiple backend systems at once. Defenders treat proxy plug-ins as high-priority assets: they should be inventoried, patched quickly, monitored for unusual request patterns, and configured with strict access control. Protecting the proxy path helps preserve the integrity of everything behind it.
