Propellant

A material used to generate thrust through combustion or another energetic reaction.

Propellant is the material that produces thrust by combustion or another energetic reaction. In rockets, it may be a solid, liquid, or hybrid mixture that releases hot gas, and the expanding gas is directed through a nozzle to create motion. The propellant is not the whole engine: performance also depends on oxidizer supply, chamber pressure, ignition, and how steadily the reaction is controlled.

In cybersecurity, propellant matters because many threats and defenses involve cyber-physical systems such as rockets, drones, launch controllers, and lab test rigs. Attackers may try to manipulate firmware, sensors, valves, or timing so the propellant is burned too early, too late, or at the wrong rate. Defenders reduce that risk with authenticated control paths, safety interlocks, telemetry checks, strict configuration management, and physical limits that prevent unsafe ignition or overpressure.
