Progressive rollout

A staged release method that exposes a feature to smaller user groups first.

A progressive rollout is a staged release method that gives a new feature to a small group of users first, then expands access gradually if no serious problems appear. Teams often use it for browser changes, security controls, and backend updates because it limits blast radius and makes defects easier to detect.

In cyber security, this matters because features that filter traffic, block scripts, or change authentication flows can break sites, expose bugs, or create new bypass opportunities. A staged rollout lets defenders monitor error rates, abuse reports, and telemetry before full deployment. Attackers also benefit from rollout patterns: they may watch for partial deployment to find inconsistent behavior across users, regions, or versions. Used well, progressive rollout is a release-engineering defense that helps validate security fixes, reduce operational risk, and catch compatibility problems before they affect everyone.
