Product work

Ongoing operational improvement work that continues after a project ends and focuses on business outcomes.

Product work is the ongoing improvement of a service, platform, or capability after the initial project is finished. Unlike project work, which ends at a launch date, product work is continuous and is measured by business outcomes: reliability, usability, risk reduction, and user adoption. In cyber security, this matters because security tools and controls are never “done”; they must be tuned, updated, and aligned to changing threats and operations.

In practice, product work shows up in patch management, rule tuning, identity cleanup, alert engineering, backup testing, and hardening changes after deployment. Defenders use it to keep controls effective as systems, users, and attackers change. Attackers benefit when organizations stop doing product work, because stale configurations, unanswered exceptions, and ignored backlog items create gaps. A mature security program treats protection as a living service, with owners, roadmaps, and regular improvement cycles.
