Process path

The file location of a running program, useful for checking whether an executable is expected or suspicious.

A process path is the filesystem location of the executable file associated with a running program. It can help identify which copy of an application is running and whether it is in an expected location, such as an installed application directory, or somewhere unusual, such as a temporary folder.

In cyber security, checking a process path adds context to a process name or resource alert: attackers may use familiar names for programs placed in unexpected locations. During investigation, defenders can compare the path with known software locations and check related details, such as the process’s parent, signature, and launch method. A path alone does not prove that a program is malicious or explain how it got there, so it should be considered alongside other evidence.
