Privileged user

an account with elevated permissions, such as administrative access.

A privileged user is an account with elevated permissions, such as an administrator, service owner, or operator account. These accounts can change security settings, manage other users, install software, read sensitive data, or approve access requests. In other words, they have more control than a standard user account.

Privileged users matter because attackers often target them for maximum impact. If an attacker can steal, reset, or impersonate a privileged account, they may be able to disable defenses, create backdoors, or move deeper into a network. This is why privileged access is tightly monitored in security programs. Defenders reduce risk with least-privilege access, multi-factor authentication, just-in-time elevation, strong logging, and separate admin accounts. In identity attacks, a flaw in login logic, account recovery, or credential enrollment can be especially dangerous when it affects a privileged user.
