Privacy monitoring

Ongoing review of how data is collected, used, and retained.

Privacy monitoring is the ongoing review of how data is collected, used, shared, and retained across a system or service. It looks beyond a one-time policy check and asks whether real data flows still match the intended rules, consent, and retention limits.

In cyber security, privacy monitoring matters because excessive collection and long retention increase exposure if an account, log store, analytics pipeline, or third-party integration is compromised. Attackers can abuse weak data governance to reconstruct user behavior, harvest sensitive metadata, or pivot through systems that were never meant to hold it. Defenders use privacy monitoring to spot overcollection, unauthorized exports, stale records, and risky vendor access. Common controls include data inventories, retention schedules, access reviews, telemetry audits, and alerts on unusual data movement. In conversational advertising, for example, it helps teams verify that context signals are minimized and stored only as long as needed.
