Prepaid Term

A billing model where the customer pays in advance for a fixed service period.

A prepaid term is a billing model where the customer pays in advance for a fixed service period, such as one month, one year, or several years. The advertised monthly price is often lower when the customer commits to a longer upfront payment, but the service only remains active for that purchased term. When the term ends, renewal usually happens at a different price and under current plan rules.

In cyber security, prepaid terms are common for hosting, domains, and virtual servers because they make infrastructure quick to obtain and easy to replace. Attackers may use prepaid services for phishing sites, malware staging, or short-lived command infrastructure, then abandon the account before the next billing cycle. Defenders use the same billing signals as clues: newly purchased services, short registration periods, and approaching expirations can indicate disposable infrastructure. For legitimate teams, prepaid terms also create risk if renewals, backups, and domain ownership are not managed carefully.
