Pre-order

an advance purchase placed before a product is officially released.

A pre-order is an advance purchase placed before a product is officially released. In retail, it helps sellers measure demand and reserve inventory, while buyers secure access to a limited or high-interest item. From a security perspective, pre-orders matter because they create urgency: people are more likely to click quickly, trust branding, and enter payment details without careful verification.

Attackers often exploit that behavior with phishing emails, fake storefronts, lookalike domains, and bogus “reservation” pages that imitate a real merchant. Defenders reduce risk by using verified domains, secure checkout flows, clear product pages, and strong customer authentication for account access and payment changes. For buyers, the key defense is simple: confirm the seller, check the URL, and read what is actually included before paying. A pre-order is not dangerous by itself, but it can be a high-pressure moment where fraud is easier to hide.
