Power design is the engineering of how a device gets, stores, regulates, and distributes electricity to its components. In a portable system, that includes the battery, charging circuit, voltage regulators, power switches, fuses, and the wiring that feeds the display, storage, CPU, and peripherals. Good power design keeps the machine stable under load and prevents one failing part from taking down the whole device.
In cyber security, power design matters because unreliable or unsafe power can create real weaknesses. Brownouts and sudden shutdowns can corrupt data, break logging, or interrupt defenses. Poorly protected charging and battery paths can also be abused through rogue chargers or malicious peripherals that draw too much current or inject noise. Defenses include regulated rails, current limiting, battery protection, secure power sequencing, and monitoring for abnormal consumption. For custom hardware, strong power design is part of making a device trustworthy, not just usable.
