A platform version is the build identifier for a device’s underlying operating system software. It distinguishes the system baseline installed on a device from its release channel or individual features. For example, administrators can use a platform version number to identify which ChromeOS build a Chromebook is running.
In security operations, this identifier helps teams track update deployment, compare device fleets, and determine whether systems include relevant security fixes or meet compatibility requirements. Attackers may target devices that remain on outdated builds, while defenders use version inventories and update policies to find and remediate those gaps. A platform version alone does not prove that a device is fully patched; teams should also consider update status and the vendor’s security information.
