Patching window

The time available to test, approve, and deploy a security update.

A patching window is the time an organization has to test, approve, and deploy a security update. It sits between finding a vulnerability and fully closing it, and it is often shaped by change-control rules, maintenance schedules, and system criticality. In practice, the window can be short for urgent flaws or longer for routine updates that need more validation.

This matters because attackers exploit the gap before a patch is applied. If a vulnerability is actively used in attacks, every extra hour in the patching window can increase risk. Defenders manage that risk by prioritizing exposed systems, scheduling emergency maintenance, preparing rollback plans, and applying compensating controls when immediate patching is not possible. A well-run patching window balances speed with stability, so security fixes land quickly without breaking essential services.
