Patch cable

A cable used to connect modules together in a modular synthesizer.

A patch cable is a short, removable cable used to connect one module to another, commonly in modular synthesizers. It carries a signal from an output to an input, letting the user rewire the system without changing the hardware itself. In modular instruments, patch cables make the signal path visible and flexible; in other technical environments, the same idea applies to temporary or manual interconnects between devices.

In cyber security, patch cables matter because physical connections can change system behavior instantly. An attacker with access to equipment may use a cable to bypass a disabled path, bridge two isolated components, or connect unauthorized devices. Defenders rely on patch cables during testing, recovery, and maintenance, but they must be labeled and documented so the current wiring is clear. In legacy systems, careful tracking of patch cables helps preserve configuration integrity and supports incident response when the physical layout must be audited.
