Partial redaction

masking part of a name while keeping the entity recognizable.

Partial redaction is the practice of hiding part of a name, account, host, or other identifier while leaving enough visible to still recognize the entity. A common pattern is to replace middle characters with symbols or blocks, such as Ze***ce. This reduces exposure of sensitive data, but it does not make the subject anonymous.

In cyber security, partial redaction appears in incident reports, victim listings, logs, and screenshots when teams want to balance privacy with useful context. It matters because a partially hidden identifier can still help defenders correlate events across systems, spot a known organization, or track a public claim back to internal assets. The same technique can also be used offensively in extortion posts to hint at a target without fully revealing it. Defenders should treat partially redacted names as clues, then verify them with telemetry, identity logs, endpoint alerts, and asset inventories before drawing conclusions.
