Panel mount

A mounting method where a component is fixed through an enclosure face for front-panel access.

Panel mount is a mechanical installation method where a component passes through a cutout in an enclosure and is fixed to the front face with a bezel, nuts, clips, or screws. The part is designed to be accessed from the outside while its body is held securely inside or against the panel. This is common for switches, LEDs, displays, USB ports, and status indicators in embedded devices and control systems.

In cyber security, panel mounting matters because it affects both usability and physical hardening. A well-mounted front-panel component can make an appliance easier to operate and inspect, while a poorly secured one can loosen, expose gaps, or create access to internals, headers, or cables. Attackers who can reach the front of a device may target exposed ports or buttons; defenders use careful panel mounting, tight tolerances, and durable enclosures to reduce tampering, preserve ingress protection, and keep the device serviceable without weakening the case.
