Oversharing

Granting broader access to data than is necessary for the job or task.

Oversharing is granting people or systems broader access to data than they need for their work. It can result from permissive folder settings, inherited permissions, expansive group membership, or links that allow more users to view information than intended.

In cybersecurity, excess access increases the chance that sensitive data will be exposed, misused, or found by someone who does not need it. Search tools and AI assistants can make existing permissions easier to exploit by surfacing information quickly; they do not necessarily grant new access. Defenses include applying least privilege, reviewing access regularly, removing stale permissions, and testing what users can retrieve through connected systems.
