Operational database

A live system that stores data used to run day-to-day operations.

An operational database is a live system that stores the data an organization uses every day to run its services, transactions, and workflows. In a cargo terminal, that can include schedules, bookings, inventory, access records, and EDI messages. Unlike a reporting warehouse, it is optimized for current business activity, so availability and integrity are critical.

In cyber security, operational databases matter because they are valuable both as attack targets and as sources of leverage. Ransomware actors may try to steal, encrypt, or threaten to publish data from these systems to disrupt operations and pressure victims. Defenders protect them with strict access control, segmentation, backups, logging, and recovery testing. Monitoring unusual queries, exports, or administrative activity can help detect abuse before business processes are disrupted.
