OpenSSL backend

The TLS implementation used by an application when it relies on OpenSSL for cryptographic verification.

An OpenSSL backend is the part of an application that uses the OpenSSL library to provide TLS functions, such as certificate validation and encrypted connections. The application’s backend matters because it determines which cryptographic implementation and verification behavior are used.

In real deployments, a TLS backend may handle mutual TLS checks, including whether a client certificate is trusted or revoked. Loading a certificate revocation list does not necessarily mean the application checks it: the application must enable revocation verification when validating the certificate. Defenders should identify which backend a service uses, review its verification settings, and test that revoked certificates are rejected. A different backend may have different behavior or exposure.
