ODBC Driver

A client-side driver that lets applications connect to data sources through the Open Database Connectivity standard.

An ODBC driver is a client-side software component that allows applications to connect to databases and other data sources using the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) standard. It translates generic database requests from tools such as reporting software, spreadsheets, or custom apps into the native language of the target system.

In cyber security, ODBC drivers matter because they sit in a sensitive bridge between users and data. They often handle connection strings, authentication material, query submission, and result parsing, so flaws in the driver can expose credentials, disrupt services, or open a path to deeper access. Attackers may target these drivers to abuse trusted connections or to exploit parsing and configuration bugs. Defenders should treat ODBC drivers as part of the attack surface, keep them patched, limit exposed credentials, and review whether legacy connectors are still necessary.
