New Tab surface

The browser page shown when a new tab opens, often used for shortcuts, recommendations, or widgets.

The New Tab surface is the browser page that appears when a user opens a new tab. It often hosts shortcuts, search boxes, recommendations, widgets, or other dynamic content. Because it is highly visible and loads by default, it is a valuable place for product features and a sensitive place for security.

In cyber security, the New Tab surface matters because it can become a trust boundary. If it pulls content from external services, that content may carry privacy, availability, or integrity risks. Malicious or broken data can mislead users, degrade the browser experience, or create a path for tracking and unwanted content delivery. Defenders treat this surface like other embedded content: they limit permissions, review data sources, isolate components, and verify that any remote content is sanitized, signed, or otherwise controlled.
