musl

A lightweight C standard library used by some Linux distributions, including Alpine.

musl is a lightweight implementation of the C standard library for Linux. It provides common functions that programs use to interact with the operating system, such as handling files, memory, and network connections. Alpine Linux uses musl by default, making it common in minimal containers and other compact Linux environments.

In cybersecurity, the specific library and build environment can matter because software components may behave differently across platforms. For example, an SSH authentication flaw may depend on how OpenSSH interacts with musl and other authentication components, so not every Linux system is affected in the same way. Defenders should inventory musl-based hosts, review relevant service and authentication settings, and apply vendor-provided updates when a vulnerability applies.
