Multi-color printing

A workflow that changes colors during a print job.

Multi-color printing is a workflow that changes colors during a print job. In 2D printing, that can mean switching inks or toner; in 3D printing, it can mean swapping filaments or toolheads to place different materials in the same object. The goal is to produce parts or documents with multiple colors without stopping the job for manual rework.

In cyber security, multi-color printing matters because color changes can carry trust signals. Secure badges, labels, packaging, and manufacturing marks often rely on controlled color placement to show authenticity, version, or ownership. If the workflow is poorly controlled, an attacker may alter a print job, spoof a product mark, or create a convincing fake credential. Defenders reduce that risk with locked print settings, audited changeovers, restricted material access, and checks that verify the final output matches the approved design.
