Memory controller

Hardware that manages how data moves between the CPU and memory.

A memory controller is the hardware that manages how data moves between the CPU and RAM. It decides when memory is read or written, how addresses are translated, and which regions are allowed or blocked. In modern systems, it is a critical part of the platform’s trust model because it sits below the operating system and can enforce rules that software assumes are fixed.

In cyber security, memory controllers matter because weaknesses at this layer can bypass normal protections. An attacker who can influence controller settings, mappings, or related registers may expose protected memory, change access boundaries, or read data that should remain isolated. Defenders care about this layer when auditing firmware, validating platform configuration, and checking whether older hardware still enforces the intended memory protections. Hardware flaws here are especially serious because they can undermine security without triggering obvious malware-like behavior.
