Mass-email automation is a workflow that prepares or sends messages to many recipients using software. It may support legitimate announcements and business communications, but can also be abused for spam, phishing, or unauthorized disclosure. Bulk messaging can create compliance, privacy, and reputational risks, especially when recipient lists or message content are sensitive.
In cyber security, controls should distinguish drafting from sending and check authorization at the point the email service executes the action. Practical safeguards include limiting permissions and recipient counts, applying rate limits, requiring approval for bulk or sensitive sends, and keeping records of attempted, approved, denied, and completed actions. A gateway can help inspect traffic, but it may not govern a workflow that reaches the mail service through another path.
