Machine-readable evidence

Data structured so systems can automatically process and verify it.

Machine-readable evidence is security proof stored in a structured format that software can collect, parse, and validate automatically. Instead of a PDF screenshot or a manual checklist, it may be a log stream, configuration record, API response, policy result, or signed report that systems can compare against expected control states.

This matters because modern security and compliance programs depend on repeatable verification. Well-structured evidence helps defenders detect control drift, confirm that settings still match policy, and speed up audits by reducing manual review. It also supports continuous assurance models, where evidence is checked over time rather than at a single point. In attacks, compromised or forged telemetry can hide real failures, so the evidence itself must be trustworthy, current, and tamper-resistant. Good implementations use consistent schemas, strong logging, integrity checks, and retention controls so the organization can prove what happened and when.
