Loss of View

A condition where operators lose visibility into the state of a process or system.

Loss of view is a condition where operators can no longer see the true state of a process, machine, or industrial control system. Displays may freeze, data may disappear, alarms may stop updating, or telemetry may be delayed or falsified. In OT environments, visibility is as important as control, because operators need accurate status to keep equipment running safely.

In cyber security, loss of view matters because it can hide an active intrusion even when processes still appear normal. Attackers may target operator stations, historians, HMI servers, or network paths that carry telemetry, making defenders blind to changes in pressure, flow, temperature, or system state. It can also be a precursor to disruption if operators cannot confirm what the plant is doing. Defenses focus on segmentation, redundant monitoring, independent sensors, logging, and passive industrial traffic analysis so teams can detect when the primary view has been degraded or manipulated.
