libcrypto

The OpenSSL library that provides core cryptographic functions such as encryption, hashing, and key handling.

libcrypto is the OpenSSL library that exposes core cryptographic functions, including encryption, hashing, random number generation, certificate and key handling, and other low-level crypto primitives. It is used indirectly by many applications, so a program may rely on libcrypto even if it never mentions OpenSSL in its own documentation.

In cyber security, libcrypto matters because a flaw in this shared component can affect many systems at once. Attackers look for reachable bugs in the code paths used to process untrusted input, such as malformed certificates, protocol messages, or exported keys. Defenders care for the same reason: patching is not just about one package, but about finding every binary, container image, appliance, or vendor build that ships its own copy. Good inventory, version tracking, and fast update validation are essential when libcrypto receives security fixes.
