Kill Zone

A tactical area where forces expect to concentrate fire on a target.

In cybersecurity, a kill zone is a deliberately monitored area where defenders expect to spot, slow, and concentrate response against an intruder. The term is borrowed from military language, but in security it usually means a network segment, endpoint group, or traffic path where detection and containment are strongest.

Kill zones matter because attackers often need to pass through predictable choke points: VPN gateways, email filters, identity systems, cloud control planes, or internal subnets. Defenders can turn those points into traps or barriers with honeypots, canary accounts, IDS/IPS, rate limiting, and segmentation. In real attacks, threat actors try to avoid these zones with stealth, living-off-the-land tools, or lateral movement that stays below alert thresholds. A well-designed kill zone gives defenders more time to classify activity, isolate hosts, and stop spread before the attacker reaches critical assets.
