Joke

A light or humorous line that depends on shared context to work.

A joke is a humorous statement or situation whose effect often depends on shared knowledge, expectations, or context. A familiar setup can create an expectation, while a punchline changes or reframes it. In the etching example, the line works because the listener recognizes the social implication and understands that real etchings would give the invitation a literal explanation.

In cybersecurity, jokes are not a technical attack method, but humor and shared context can appear in social engineering. An attacker may use a familiar reference or playful message to seem trustworthy, lower a person’s guard, or encourage them to open a link or attachment. Defenders should assess unexpected requests and links by their source and behavior, not by whether the message sounds friendly or amusing.
