JavaScript attack chain

A sequence where browser-executed script helps drive compromise.

A JavaScript attack chain is a sequence of steps in which code executed by a browser helps advance a compromise. Script may interact with a page, use the authority of an authenticated session, or trigger actions that lead to unauthorized changes. The term describes a role in an attack, not a specific vulnerability or a guarantee that JavaScript alone can compromise a system.

This matters because a browser may carry privileged state, such as an administrator’s signed-in session. If malicious script can act through that browser context, it may help turn existing access into server-side changes, potentially including installation of persistent code. Defenses include separating administrative browsing from ordinary activity, limiting privileged session duration, and protecting sites against script injection and other unsafe content. A reported chain should not be treated as proof of a particular entry method or real-world deployment unless independently established.
