Java-Based Malware

Malicious software built in or packaged with Java, often used for flexible delivery.

Java-based malware is malicious software written in Java or packaged with Java runtime components. Because Java is portable, the same payload can often run across different operating systems as long as the required runtime is present. Attackers use this to widen delivery options and make detection harder.

In practice, Java-based malware may arrive as a JAR file, a launcher, or a bundled installer that hides the real payload. It is commonly used for information stealing, remote access, and loader activity, where one component fetches or decrypts the next stage. Defenders watch for suspicious Java execution, unusual child processes, unexpected network connections, and Java apps requesting access to files, screenshots, or credentials. The term does not by itself identify a specific malware family; it only describes the language or packaging used to deliver the threat.
