The IoT support lifecycle is the period during which a device manufacturer provides software updates and security fixes for a connected device. Support may include firmware patches, vulnerability corrections, and other maintenance; its duration can vary by product and manufacturer.
When support ends, newly discovered flaws may remain unpatched, increasing a device’s exposure over time. Attackers can scan for vulnerable or outdated devices, while defenders should track product support dates, install available updates, and replace or isolate devices that no longer receive fixes. Before buying connected equipment, check how long the manufacturer commits to supporting it.
