Interconnection agreements

Utility-facing documents that describe how a project connects to the grid.

Interconnection agreements are utility-facing contracts and technical documents that explain how a power project connects to the grid. They typically cover connection points, capacity limits, protective equipment, testing requirements, and responsibilities between the project owner and the utility. In renewable-energy portfolios, they are part of the paperwork that makes a project buildable and financeable.

They matter in cyber security because they can reveal sensitive infrastructure details, engineering assumptions, and commercial terms. Attackers who steal these files may use them for extortion, competitive pressure, or reconnaissance against connected systems. Defenders should treat them as restricted business-critical data, using access controls, segmentation, encryption, and careful document handling. In a breach, these records can be as valuable as source code or credentials because they expose how a project is wired into a larger operational environment.
