An integrated circuit (IC) is a compact electronic circuit built on a single semiconductor chip. It can combine transistors, resistors, capacitors, and other functions into one package, which makes devices smaller, faster, and more reliable than building the same logic from separate parts.
In cyber security, ICs matter because they are the physical foundation of every computer, router, sensor, and secure device. Attackers may target them through supply-chain tampering, counterfeit parts, or hardware implants that are hard to detect once assembled. Defenders use IC analysis to verify authenticity, inspect unknown chips, and confirm whether a component behaves as expected. In legacy hardware, an IC with missing markings may have to be identified by its circuit behavior rather than its label, which is why reverse engineering, testing, and documentation checks are important parts of hardware trust.
