Install flow

The sequence a user follows to add software or an extension to a device.

An install flow is the sequence of screens, prompts, and actions a user follows to add software, an extension, or another component to a device. It usually includes download, verification, permissions, consent, and completion. In the browser context, an install flow may move code from a desktop utility into Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or another browser, where it can gain access through the permissions it requests.

It matters in cyber security because each step can shape trust. A vague prompt, preselected option, or bundled add-on can make users approve more than they intended. Attackers abuse install flows to hide unwanted software, change settings, or push extensions with excessive permissions. Defenders review the flow for clear consent, code signing, silent-install behavior, and policy controls on managed devices. A clean install flow should be visible, reversible, and limited to the minimum access needed.
