Industrial autonomy

The ability to maintain key capabilities without excessive dependence on external actors.

Industrial autonomy is the ability to maintain essential industrial capabilities without excessive dependence on external actors. In strategic sectors such as space, this can include control over critical technologies, skilled work, suppliers, and the capacity to operate and maintain systems. It does not necessarily mean producing everything domestically; it means having reliable options and sufficient control to keep important functions running.

In cybersecurity, autonomy matters because reliance on a single foreign supplier, cloud provider, or software component can create exposure to outages, compromised updates, sanctions, or supply-chain attacks. Attackers may exploit weaknesses in third-party products to reach connected organizations. Defenses include mapping dependencies, assessing suppliers, protecting update and access processes, maintaining alternatives for critical services, and building local expertise. These measures improve resilience while reducing reliance on any one external actor.
