Incident response exercise

a controlled simulation used to test how teams detect, communicate, and recover from a cyber event.

An incident response exercise is a controlled simulation that tests how an organization detects, communicates, and recovers from a cyber event. It may be a tabletop discussion or a live technical drill, but the goal is the same: practice decision-making before a real attack forces it. Teams usually review alerts, assign roles, escalate issues, preserve evidence, and decide when to isolate systems or notify partners.

This matters because many cyber incidents fail or succeed on process, not just tools. In real attacks, delays in logging review, unclear authority, or broken communication can let damage spread. Exercises expose those weak points early and help defenders improve containment, coordination, and recovery. They are especially useful in connected environments where multiple business units or external providers must act together under pressure.
