Identity validation

the process of checking whether suspicious activity, access, or disclosures match real account or system behavior.

Identity validation is the process of checking whether suspicious activity, access, or disclosures really match a legitimate user, account, device, or system. In practice, defenders compare login signals, session history, IP address, MFA prompts, device fingerprints, and directory records to see whether the behavior fits the claimed identity.

This matters because attackers often hide behind stolen credentials, abused service accounts, or false public claims. A ransomware post, for example, may name a victim before any internal proof exists. Identity validation helps teams separate rumor from compromise by confirming whether the named account actually logged in, whether the access path was normal, and whether service or data activity aligns with known behavior. It is a core step in incident response, fraud review, and access control because it prevents overreaction to unverified claims while still surfacing real intrusion indicators.
